Bramlett \n\n\n\n\nNetworking\n\n\n\nFeatured Presenter\n\n\n\nChapter Business\n\n\n\nProgram Directors Update\n\n\n\n\nHorace King\, an African-American architect\, engineer\, bridge builder & Former Alabama State Representative is historically considered the most respected bridge builder of the 19th century Deep South\, constructing dozens of bridges in Alabama\, Georgia\, and Mississippi. Lecturer Andrew J. Bramblett\, representing the Kennesaw Historical Society will speak to Horace King’s impact in reconstructing the Deep South and how the Society works to maintain and advocate for the works of Mr. King. \n\n\n\nThe event will include refreshments\, networking\, and a platform open to public Q&A. All are welcome. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Feb. 3\, 1846\, the Alabama Legislature approved a bill of emancipation for famed builder Horace King. \n\n\n\nBorn in bondage on a South Carolina plantation in 1807\, he was brought to Alabama in the early 1830s to aide in the construction of the first bridge across the lower Chattahoochee River. A talented craftsman who specialized in heavy-timber construction\, King ranked among the most respected builders in the South. During his career he built an estimated 125 structures\, mostly bridges\, in Alabama\, Georgia and Mississippi.  \n\n\n\nThe sturdy\, gravity-defying wooden bridges of Horace King were marvels of construction. They helped to connect communities and expand commerce in the first decades of widespread white settlement along Alabama’s southeastern border. Still\, we know virtually nothing about King’s early life. In the 1830s\, when he was about 25\, King was sold to South Carolina builder John Godwin. \n\n\n\nKing may have learned techniques of the building trade from Godwin. By most accounts\, though\, he seemed to possess the intuitive skills necessary to become a renowned craftsman on his own. For his part\, Godwin discerned the depths of King’s abilities early on and treated him more as apprentice than an enslaved workman. Their decades-long partnership — spanning King’s time in bondage and as a free man — lasted until Godwin’s death in 1859.  Godwin and King arrived in Columbus\, Georgia\, in 1832\, having won the contract to build a 900-foot covered bridge across the Chattahoochee’s muddy waters. The bridge connected Columbus with a small hamlet named Girard on the Alabama side of the river. Later that year\, the Alabama Legislature named Girard the first seat of newly established Russell County. Once the bridge was completed\, Godwin established himself in Girard\, which merged with Phenix City in 1923. He and King built many of the earliest homes and businesses there\, including the first Russell County Courthouse.

Melody was recognized for the local\, regional\, and national impact of her K-12 design education initiatives\, design advocacy\, writings and community programs. \n\n\n\nA staunch advocate for architecture and the profession\, Melody holds the distinction as Atlanta’s only newspaper columnist focusing solely on architects and architectural design excellence and continues to engage public and political leaders about the built environment. She has also been a champion for integrating architecture into K-12 curriculum\, a leader in the community and the Institute. Her leadership with Discover Architecture has been shared with architects and allied professionals through innovative design education workshops led by her at art education conferences and at local\, state\, regional\, and national AIA events since 2011. On the AIA Atlanta Board of Directors from 2011 to 2016\, Melody raised the influence of the organization with political and civic leaders\, developed innovative public programs with local and national reach\, and institutionalized the importance of advocacy. \n\n\n\nShe has received numerous awards and appointments over her career\, recognizing her innovation; commitment to diversity\, inclusion\, and equity; and visionary leadership. From 2000 – 2013\, she served as Principal Architect on a master planning and design joint venture for the $7 billion expansion of the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport… the world’s most traveled airport and owner’s representative for the construction of the International Concourse and Terminal. \n\n\n\nShe was the Senior Program Manager of design and construction for all 33 sports venues of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In 2013\, Cheryl was selected as “Woman of the Year” by the Atlanta Business League\, a 2018 Atlanta Business Chronicle “Women Who Mean Business” honoree\, a 2018 National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC) Georgia Chapter Hard Hat Awards recipient\, and the 2018 recipient of the Ivan Allen Sr. Trophy recipient for broad commitment to her profession’s community with a deep and lasting impact on her peers\, AIA\, and the built environment. \n\n\n\nShe is also the recent recipient of the 2019 NOMAtlanta Inspire Award for Service to the Profession. Cunningham\n\n\n\nExecutive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer | T. Dallas Smith & Company \n\n\n\nAudra is a senior real estate executive who transitioned into tenant representation following a 23-year career in telecommunications including time with BellSouth and Earthlink. She performed in several senior management roles\, including call center management\, marketing\, product management and national special projects. \n\n\n\nAudra began her career as a tenant rep broker in Atlanta during the heart of the 2008 recession. She was recruited to join JLL in Washington DC in 2010 where she built a client base of law firms\, non-profits\, government contractors and corporations. Subsequently\, Audra was recruited by CBRE and Newmark Knight Frank where she represented clients between Atlanta and Washington DC. Prior to joining TDS&Co\, Audra worked with Physician’s Realty Trust (REIT)\, where she was responsible for leasing over three million square feet of medical office space throughout the Southeast. \n\n\n\nAs the firm’s first female senior executive\, she is responsible for leading the expansion of the company’s national tenant representation brokerage division\, talent development and recruitment while overseeing the firm’s administrative operations.

DESCRIPTION:Our chapter will be participating in Decatur’s MLK\, Jr. Service Project this year to pay tribute to Dr. King’s legacy. Join members of NOMAtlanta\, and our student NOMAS chapters from Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State to partner in a day of service.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDecatur’s MLK\, Jr. Service Project is a community-building initiative that unites people from all walks of life in pursuit of the “Beloved Community” ideal. Its mission is to provide free home maintenance and repairs to senior citizen homeowners in Decatur during the MLK\, Jr. holiday weekend. We will be volunteering for the project by doing yard work at one of the homes. Please come dressed for warmth and comfort and be ready to make a positive impact.
